Understanding and Supporting Gender Expansive Youth with Mychelle Williams

from $89.00

June 7th, 1:00-3:00pm EST, conducted online via Zoom

During this session, participants will deepen their understanding of gender diversity and enhance their ability to provide affirming care for young clients across the gender spectrum.

Gender-expansive youth face higher rates of mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, and suicidality, compared to their cisgender peers. According to the 2023 U.S National Survey of Mental Health of LGBTQ Young People, 81% wanted mental health care, while 56% of them could not access the mental health care they desired. Discrimination, lack of social support, anti-LGBTQ legislation, and stigma contribute to these disparities.

Through this course, participants will examine cultural, social, and psychological influences on gender identity and expression. Participants will also learn about the most recent policies that impact gender-affirming care, schools, and communities. Through case studies and interactive discussions, participants will gain practical strategies needed to deliver affirming care that promotes the holistic well-being of young people exploring their gender identity, as well as how to assess internal biases effectively. Participants will also leave with tips for caring for themselves while navigating the oppressive systems that create barriers to resources.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Gain a comprehensive understanding of how gender identity and expression is informed and influenced by cultural, social and psychological factors.

  2. Learn clinical interventions to support the mental wellness of gender-expansive youth

  3. Explore bias and stigma and how it impacts healthcare and mental health care policy

  4. Develop regulation and care strategies to protect against burnout

This training is eligible for 2 Continuing Education Credits for NBCC Counselors and New York LMHCs, LCSWs, and LMSWs
