Navigating Neurodivergence: Strategies for Care with Ndeye Oumou Sylla

This CEU equips therapists with the essential tools and insights needed to effectively navigate neurodivergence within the therapeutic practice. Participants will explore neurodiversity concepts and challenge prevailing neuronormative beliefs and practices while learning to apply affirming and inclusive approaches in therapy sessions. By the end of this training, participants will emerge with a deeper understanding of neurodivergent experiences and concrete strategies to enhance their therapeutic practice, fostering an environment of validation, empowerment, and respect for neurodivergent clients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define neurodiversity and neurodivergence, recognizing the spectrum of experiences.

  • Explore the intersectionality of neurodivergence with other aspects of identity, such as race, gender, sexuality, and socioeconomic status.

  • Evaluate the limitations of the pathology paradigm and medical model of disability in understanding and supporting neurodivergent individuals.

  • Identify key principles of neurodiversity affirming therapy

  • Develop skills for creating a supportive and affirming therapeutic environment that fosters autonomy, self-determination, and mutual respect.

This training is eligible for 2 Continuing Education Credits for NBCC Counselors and New York LMHCs, LCSWs, and LMSWs

  • oumou is a Senegalese-Guinean American raised multi-hyphenate polycreative - therapist, coach, disruptor, zinester, writer, speaker, consultant and facilitator of spaces for radical learning. oumou is a two-time graduate of Syracuse University and former adjunct professor of the same school. she is the creator of RMHFA, a workshop that is slowly but surely changing the care and mental health landscape. oumou’s lived and professional experiences are gifts that allow her to support people and businesses in intuitive and radical ways. their work aims to disrupt systems of disconnection, the laziness lie, the productivity death escalator and “the transactional ways in which relationships exist under capitalism” (word 2 niki franco). in her work, she incorporates different modes of learning, facilitation, processing and healing based on your needs, context, and background. they are mindful and aware that we are impacted by Anti-Blackness, Ableism, Gender Based Oppression, Capitalism, state sanctioned violence, and other forms of systemic injustice in every aspect of our lives.
