Dating, DMs, & Dual Roles: Modern Social Media Ethics for Trauma-Informed Clinicians

from $89.00

March 13th 1:00-3:00pm EST, conducted online via Zoom

Social media has become one of the most used marketing channels amongst therapists, yet the current ethical guidelines have failed to provide clear guidance on how to use social media (White, Hanley, 2024). The boundaries between therapists’ personal lives and professional lives have become blurred with social media, dating apps, and online communities (Kolmes & Taube, 2016) . This training will explore the ethical dilemmas therapists face while navigating the complex intersections of technology, dating, and professional ethics for mental health providers.

Participants will explore real-world scenarios that therapists face when their personal and professional worlds collide on social media. We’ll cover scenarios including discovering your clients social media or dating profiles, navigating duals within niched communities, and how to ensure that therapists’ social media platforms are ethical and trauma-informed. This course aims to provide practical frameworks to establish clear boundaries for yourself and your digital presence.

Whether you’re a seasoned clinician adapting new technologies or a newer professional establishing your social media platform, this course will support you in developing tools, policies, and an ethical framework needed to navigate the complex terrain of modern clinical practice.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and analyze the unique ethical challenges social media and technology present for therapists.

  • Develop and implement a personalized social media and technology policy that aligns with ethical codes of conduct.

  • Apply ethical decision making frameworks and policies to evaluate complex examples involving dual relationships encountered through social media, dating apps , and niched communities.

  • Identify key ethical standards to maintain clients confidentiality
