Addressing Racial Microaggressions in Therapy

from $89.00

May 17th, 1:00-3:00pm EST, conducted online via Zoom

The negative impacts of microaggressions range from racial battle fatigue, increased likelihood of depression & anxiety, and higher mortality rates, yet  many clinicians struggle to navigate microaggressions in the therapeutic space (Smith, David, Stanton, 2020; Noh & Kasper, 2003; Barnes, De Loen, Lewis, Bienias, Wilson, Evans, 2008; Chase, Nuru-Jeter, Adler, Brody, Lin, Blackburn, Epel, 2014). While the emphasis on incorporating multiculturalism is pervasive, many clinicians struggle to respond to microaggressions perpetrated by clients.

This workshop will support clinicians in deepening their knowledge of microaggressions, racial trauma, and how to disrupt microaggressions. Participants will be able to label the various themes of microaggressions and the core messages behind each microaggression. Lastly, attendees will develop tools to support themselves while navigating microaggressions directed towards them in the clinical space.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will deepen their understanding of microaggressions and the core messages behind the microaggressions.

  2. Participants will also understand the various clinical microaggressions that may be present in their clinical practice.

  3. Participants will develop tools to respond to clients perpetrating microaggressions in the therapeutic space

This training is eligible for 2 Continuing Education Credits for NBCC Counselors and New York LMHCs, LCSWs, and LMSWs
